Vienna is the only capital city in the world where wine of the highest quality is produced.

VIENNESE WINE - 2000 Years of Success

The history of Viennese wine dates back to antiquity, when the Romans settled the region around Vienna. The Romans brought their winemaking expertise to the area along the Danube that now encompasses Vienna. As early as the 1st century AD, vines were planted and wine production began. The favorable climate, combined with the fertile soil along the Danube, provided ideal conditions for viticulture.

Roman settlements such as Vindobona (ancient Vienna) utilized wine production both for local consumption and trade. Wine was a vital part of Roman diet and culture. Archaeological finds, including remains of vines and wine presses, attest to the importance of winemaking in the region. These early beginnings laid the foundation for Vienna’s centuries-old winemaking tradition.

The Habsburg Era: Golden Age and Refinement

The Habsburg dynasty, which ruled Vienna from the 13th to the 20th century, played a crucial role in the development and promotion of Viennese wine. Under the Habsburgs, winemaking in Vienna experienced a new golden age. The Habsburgs, known for their love of art and culture, also promoted viticulture as an important part of Viennese lifestyle.

In the 16th and 17th centuries, wine production was further professionalized. The Habsburgs established vineyards and developed new techniques to improve wine quality. The city of Vienna itself began to regulate its wine production, implementing various regulations and standards for quality assurance.

The Habsburgs were also known for using wine as part of their diplomacy and social life. Wine was served at parties and banquets, serving as a symbol of wealth and power. The Habsburg estates and cellars became centers of winemaking, where wine was not only produced but also refined and stored. Viennese wines, particularly Grüner Veltliner, became increasingly renowned and appreciated.

Our Vinyard – Ried Leiten

Our vineyard is situated on the Kadoltsberg, more precisely in the Ried Leiten, a small and historic wine-growing region on the edge of the Mauer district in the south of Vienna. The name "Ried" originates from the ancient German word for "clearing," a nod to the centuries-old tradition of clearing land for grape cultivation in this area. The region is small but mighty, and it is considered a hidden gem by wine enthusiasts in Austria and beyond.

This pristine and idyllic location has been used for wine production since the late Middle Ages. It is a region where the symbiotic relationship between nature and the city is on full display, where the stunning vineyards of the Vienna Woods serve as a backdrop to the city's bustling metropolis. It is a place where history and modernity coexist, and where the traditions of winemaking are deeply ingrained in the culture of the people.

At Staudenrauscher, we pride ourselves on our artisanal approach to winemaking. Every aspect of our work, from cutting and tying to harvesting, pressing, filling, labelling, and more, is done entirely by hand. This hands-on approach is at the heart of our winemaking philosophy, as it allows us to maintain complete control over every stage of the winemaking process, resulting in wines of the highest quality and character.
